Professor Nocturne’s Return

It was the year 2050. The world had become a large machine, with technology spread out in the most unlikely of places. It was hard to believe that only 30 years ago, some of this technology wasn’t even thought of. It had become increasingly easier to create new technology and use it for the benefit of the people. However, humanity had paid a price for all the technological developments. Mother Nature had become a thing of the past. All the flora and fauna that existed were artificially created and artificially cared for. Humans had survived because they drank a special elixir that helped them live without much oxygen, since its levels had significantly reduced. Life was unimaginably fast. However, there were some people who did not particularly like the speed, but were curious about life on Earth before they were born. Of course, they loved the technology that was at their disposal, but often wished for things to slow down slightly.
Andy, Amy and Harry were a trio of 14 year olds, who loved playing football and studying life on Earth before 2020. They were very nice children, and loved to learn new things whenever they got the chance. They had known each other since they were very young, and spent most of their time together, be it the cold winter or broiling summer. Andy was a funny and witty boy, Amy was a bookworm and was very intelligent, and Harry was a musician who loved playing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and was hardly seen without his yoyo. Andy also had a dog called Moo, named so because her coat was like that of a cow – white with black patches. Moo spent all her time with the three kids, and always stole Harry’s yoyo.
They were at Andy’s house playing Truth or Dare, Amy was about to rotate the bottle when they heard Andy’s mother shriek. They went outside immediately to find her looking at the TV, terrified. Professor Nocturne, the man who had caused havoc around the world before disappearing, was back. He was very tall, had a long face, with a grey goatee and terrifying eyes. His left iris was purple, the same as his long waistcoat, and looking at him was enough to instil fear among all.
‘Last time, I had failed to complete my mission of building an army of robots that barfed bullets, but this will not happen again. I am back, stronger than ever, and I will not leave until my mission has been accomplished. Once this is done, I will rule the world’, declared Professor Nocturne. Once they heard this, Andy muttered something incoherently.
‘What did you say? Can you enunciate please?’ asked Amy.
‘We need to stop this, we can’t just sit around and do nothing!’ said Andy seriously.
‘What are you on about?’
‘You will do no such thing!’
Harry and Andy’s mother had spoken simultaneously. However, Andy was indignant.
‘He killed Dad! I will not rest until he is defeated. I will avenge my father’s death,’ said Andy, a determined look on his face. Just as he said this, they heard screams outside the door and they knew exactly what was going on. Andy’s father was the last person that Professor Nocturne had killed before his disappearance. And he was going to go after him.
Despite several protests from his mother, Andy ran to his room and took out the device that he and his two friends had created. A freeze gun, which, when used, surrounded the person in ice like a mould. The frozen person can see and hear everything, but cannot move at all. They hadn’t yet created a device that would defrost the person. Harry and Amy followed him out, while his mother stayed in with Moo. Nobody could stop the children. They ran out into the street and saw Professor Nocturne approaching.
‘Well, hello there. I assume you know why I am here?’ said the Professor, an evil smirk on his face.
Andy did not answer, but shot at his enemy. Professor Nocturne easily dodged the firing.
‘I see that you are prepared. But you are only a child, you cannot defeat me.’ With this, he began walking towards the children, and they in turn walked towards him. Amy and Harry managed to somehow get into a fistfight with the Professor while Andy tried to aim. He wasn’t as powerful as he claimed to be. Finally, they managed to hold him down, and Andy aimed right at his face. The look of sheer horror was etched on his face as his entire body froze. The police had arrived by this point, and were shocked to see the scene before them. The children explained the entire situation as the Professor’s frozen mould was taken away and Andy’s mother ran out of the house with Moo.
‘We are grateful for your services to the society. It’s good that you kids are smart, otherwise you didn’t stand a chance. However, don’t go around defeating criminals next time, or else we won’t have our job,’ said a policeman.
The following Saturday, Andy, Amy and Harry were honoured for their services to the society, and were offered to attend several workshops at museums to learn about the past of the planet, which is all that they wanted to do.
