Why you should watch ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

Representation, especially in foreign media, is very rare. So when a minority is represented in a hugely successful show, it is a very big deal. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those shows.

I was introduced to B99 earlier this year by a friend, and I’m so, so happy that I started watching this show. Never before have I seen a show that is so diverse, so funny, and so non-offensive. Considering that it is an American TV show, having Black and Latina non-stereotypical representation is HUGE. Representing vulnerable men, strong women, and the LGBTQ+ community is revolutionary, especially for such a popular show. It gives these people a voice, a platform, a place to be heard and seen. I honestly can’t imagine how emotional and amazing that must feel. Another thing this show does so well, is addressing issues that usually aren’t addressed, like police brutality and racism. Normalisation of coming out/having different sexual orientations is extraordinary, considering the community is shunned and ridiculed for being themselves.

The characters, and the actors playing those characters, are so, so good, I can’t even think of better adjectives to describe them. They are woke, and are proud to be part of such an amazing show. And because this show is so amazing and popular, it was no surprise that it got picked up by NBC a day after its cancellation. I would now like to mention certain things that I love about the characters of this show.

• Jake Peralta is a vulnerable man, and isn’t afraid to be so. He considers his wife (!!!) Amy Santiago to be his equal, believes in her abilities, and encourages her success. Such a supportive husband.
• Amy Santiago is smart and nerdy, but brave and beautiful at the same time. She is a proud Latina, and a sergeant, who has worked hard to be where she is.
• Rosa Diaz is a tough Latina, whose can do ballet. She can be tough and sensitive, and knows how to get her job done. Oh, and she’s also bi.
• Gina Linetti. Enough said.
• Charles Boyle is a man who isn’t afraid to show affection, and is the best food connoisseur ever.
• Raymond Holt is a black, gay man who is the Captain of the 99th precinct. He is a black, gay man in a position of power. Oh, and he can be hilarious while keeping a straight face.
• Terry Jeffords is a dedicated father, loving husband, tough on the outside and a softie on the inside. He is a sergeant, and he is black. Another person of colour in a position of power.
• Michael Hitchcock and Norm Scully are the best of friends, and love food. They may seem stupid, but are caring, and very, very entertaining.
• Special mention for Doug Judy – the best criminal ever.

NINE-NINE!
